A fire broke out early Saturday afternoon in the Schallberg tunnel near Ried-Brig (VS). It was a travel coach that caught fire. The 52 bus passengers were able to exit the vehicle and leave the tunnel. There are no injuries, according to the police.

The fire, which started shortly after 13h00, completely destroyed the coach of a group of Croatian tourists and the tunnel wall was also damaged, according to Valais police who communicated via Twitter and confirmed to Keystone -AT some details cited on the website 20 Minuten.

Tourists were on the road back to their country. Luckily, there were no other vehicles in the tunnel at the time of the incident, said a spokesman for the cantonal police. The fire was quickly controlled by firefighters.

The Schallberg tunnel on the Simplon road and therefore the Simplon pass itself have since been closed for an indefinite period. So there is currently no direct detour possible to cross the Simplon, adds the police. (Ps / nxp)
