Kate Middleton responded to Radacanu's victory by posting on her joint account with Prince William.

The Duchess was joined by her in-laws, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, to celebrate Radacanu's victory.

Clarence House posted on the same social media website: “Congratulations to @EmmaRaducanu on your #USOpen win - what a fantastic achievement!

The 18-year-old's victory was also a historic moment for British tennis, as she was the youngest Briton to reach a US Open final in the Open era and the first British tennis player to become Grand Slam champion since 1977.

The previously ranked 150th tennis player is also the first qualifier to triumph in any of the four majors.
