Archives: meeting the challenge of digitization

0 23

This is one of the concerns raised by experts on the occasion of the International Archives Day celebrated on June 9, 2021.

From the Latin “archivum”, the Archives designate all the documents, speeches, acts, collections, in short collective memory, relating to the history of a people. They serve as a basis for posterity to conduct research, enrich knowledge and better build the future. Like other countries in the world, Cameroon observes the related day on June 9, 2021, under the theme: "Strengthening archives in crisis situations for better governance". According to the Minister of Arts and Culture, Pierre Ismaël Bidoung Mkpatt, who launched the festivities this Wednesday at the national museum, this theme calls on the various actors to be more "resilient to face the difficult situation facing this sub-sector".

Adapt to digital changes

The 3rd edition of the International Archives Week, open until June 11, provides an opportunity for experts to address issues related to the value and preservation of collective memory. Open days are thus organized at the CRTV radio house to revisit the essentials of documents, tapes, speeches and other major events in the history of Cameroon. For example, the resignation of the first president Ahmadou Ahidjo, the disaster of Lake Nyos or the accession of the head of state Paul Biya to the supreme office. According to librarian Éric Dikos Oumarou, these legacies deserve progressive digitization with a view to their long-term exploitation.

Contribute to governance

This is the basis of the theme of this International Archives Day in Cameroon. According to the Director of Archives and Documentation at the Ministry of Arts and Culture, it is a question of "strengthening the archival offer and disseminating it on digital platforms for wide appropriation by decision-makers". For Dr Ngwang Michael, “This strengthening implies the revision of the legal framework”. To this end, a technical team is at work for the restructuring of the National Archives of Cameroon.
