Photos of minister who escapes assassination attempt, daughter and driver killed
Gunmen attacked a car carrying Ugandan Minister of Public Works and Transport, General Katumba Wamala, in an assassination attempt, killing his daughter and driver.
It was established that four motorcycle attackers opened fire on a vehicle carrying the former army commander on the outskirts of Kampala in Kiasasi on Tuesday morning June 1.
According to several corroborating sources, the attackers followed General Katumba's vehicle with registration number H4DF 2138 before opening fire on them.
General Wamala survived with gunshot wounds to his left arm and chest and was rushed to hospital.
Sadly, her daughter Brenda Nantongo Wahala and driver Haruna Kayondo died on the spot.
The former commander was on his way to attend a vigil for his mother-in-law at the time of the shooting.
Images circulating on social media show Wamala with his mouth open, in apparent distress next to the car and his light pants splattered with blood. The footage also showed bullet holes in a car window and envelopes on the ground.
"There was a shooting which implicated him… he is injured and he was taken to the hospital, his driver was killed ”Army spokeswoman Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso said.
According to local media reports, General Wamala has enjoyed a distinguished career. Prior to being appointed Minister of Public Works by President Yoweri Museveni in December 2019, Wamala was Chief of Defense (2013-2017) in the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF).
Meanwhile, her daughter, Brenda, had recently returned from the United States of America.
“Brenda had just returned from the United States. She only started working recently ”said Joyce Ssentongo, a member of General Wamala's in-laws.
Ssentongo described the slain girl as a humble girl with a bright future ahead of her.
