Ivory Coast: in Abidjan, a united opposition against ADO but with uncertain strategy
The Ivorian opposition organized a large rally on Saturday to display its unity against the contested candidacy of Alassane Ouattara for a third term on October 31.
It's the end of the day and the sun is slowly descending on the Ebrié lagoon. Davy leaves the Plateau district in Abidjan where he attended the meeting organized by the entire Ivorian opposition. In his thirties, an activist of the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI) since the 2000s, he wears a green t-shirt in honor of his training and his leader, Henri Konan Bédié.
However, he said he was a little disappointed: “It was important to be there to say that we are opposed to Alassane Ouattara's third term. But I was waiting for a clear slogan. We are ready. But we have to know exactly what is expected of us. Our leaders can no longer hide. We must assume. "
In recent days, Bedié's relatives and communicators did not hide to announce it, willingly showing the muscles: this meeting would mark the great beginning of civil disobedience. After launching this slogan on September 20, Henri Konan Bédié would finally specify its content. Abidjan
No big announcement
Speaking to close the event, the leader of the opposition, in his capacity as dean and former head of state, Bédié did not make any big announcement. He just assured that "the dictatorship of the RHDP (Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace) unified will be defeated in a few days or weeks" and called the "Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, to take up the Ivorian file for the establishment of a credible independent electoral body before the presidential election ”.
Should we deduce from this that he ultimately hopes to participate? In recent days, Daoukro's Sphinx had privately hinted that his fight against Alassane Ouattara now came before the question of his candidacy.
“Bédié wants to be a candidate, but he is stuck by the pressure put by Guillaume Soro and Laurent Gbagbo. If he did not know how to galvanize the activists this Saturday, when will he have the opportunity to do so? Power will no longer let us meet in this way, ”said one of his relatives. The election is still scheduled for October 31, and the campaign is scheduled to run from 15 to 29.
Before him, the other opposition figures gathered at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny stadium were much more offensive. Pascal Affi N'Guessan, whose candidacy was also selected, called for a political transition for the rebirth of Côte d'Ivoire ”. "Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, let's be in action on the ground for the departure of Alassane Ouattara," continued the former Prime Minister, present alongside Assoa Adou, representative of the rival branch of the Front populaire ivoirien (FPI).
ACCORDING TO THE INTERVENERS, THE ATTACKS AGAINST ALASSANE OUATTARA SOMETIMES HAD XENOPHOBIC RELENTS.
