Real Madrid ready to compete with rival Barcelona to sign Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez in summer, sources close to the player told ESPN.

Martinez - who has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season - would be available for 111 million euros in July under a clause in his contract with the Serie A club.

The Bernabeu was concerned about the lack of line goals before Madrid this campaign, with excessive dependence Karim Benzema.

Summer signature Luka Jovic has struggled to adapt to Spanish football since leaving Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring only twice in La Liga - although he found the net against Osasuna last weekend.

Sources in Madrid would neither confirm nor deny an interest in Martinez when she was contacted by ESPN.

The striker has been strongly linked to Barcelona as a late season substitute for Luis Suarez, who will miss the rest of the campaign after undergoing knee surgery in January.

Sources also told ESPN that Manchester United to sign Argentine international but be aware that the player favors a trip to Camp Nou.

A potential stumbling block in a move to Madrid would be Martinez's lack of a European passport.

La Liga clubs are allowed to welcome a maximum of three non-European players in their teams.

Madrid already has the Brazilian contingent of Vinicius junior, Rodrygo et Eder militao, including the new signing of Reinier who should join the Castilla reserve team next week.
