Real Madrid are ready to compete with rivals Barcelona to sign the Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez in summer, sources close to the player told ESPN.

Martinez - who has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season - is reportedly available for € 111million in July under a clause in his contract with the Serie A club.

The Bernabeu was concerned about the lack of line goals before Madrid this campaign, with excessive dependence Karim Benzema.

Summer signature Luka Jovic has struggled to adjust to Spanish football since leaving Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring just twice in La Liga - although he found the net against Osasuna last weekend.

Sources in Madrid would not confirm or deny an interest in Martinez when contacted by ESPN.

The forward has been heavily linked with Barcelona as a late-season replacement for Luis Suarez, who will miss the rest of the campaign after undergoing knee surgery in January.

Sources also told ESPN that Manchester United want to sign Argentina international but be aware that the player favors a trip to Camp Nou.

A potential stumbling block in a move to Madrid is said to be Martinez's lack of a European passport.

La Liga clubs are allowed to welcome a maximum of three non-European players in their teams.

Madrid already has the Brazilian contingent of Vinicius junior, Rodrygo et Eder militao, including the new signing of Reinier who is expected to join the Castilla reserve squad next week.
